School In Session August 21st
School Plans Student Activities
Superintendent Ottman discussed the August 21, 2017 Solar Eclipse with the Board. Superintendent Ottman has attended a couple meetings of the Community Action Committee (CAC) as they are planning some activities during the day of the eclipse. The CAC is planning these events to make this a special day for the kids and requested their participation in the activities. It was stated that the St. Joseph School District, Mid-Buchanan School District and East Buchanan School District have cancelled classes that day. Mr. Ottman reported that all other conference schools in Northwest Missouri are planning to have school that day. The Board discussed the many positives and negatives of having school that day. The Board decided to have a full day of school Monday, August 21st as planned. They are giving the parents the option of keeping their children at home that day with no penalty. It will be an excused absence and the child will be allowed to make up work missed. The plans for that day are coming together. A district patron has made contact with a retired NASA person who is interested in speaking to the kids for an hour that morning about his experiences and knowledge of the eclipse. Teachers will be taking the students out in the morning when the eclipse begins and the moon starts to go in front of the sun. Students will eat lunch at normal time. Teachers will take students out to the football field around 12:30 to participate in the activities sponsored by CAC and watch the solar eclipse in the totality phase. School will dismiss at normal time. It is important to know that we are still in the planning phase. Protective glasses have been donated by Home Exchange Bank and Dr. Bonebreak from St. Joe. Students will be given a moon pie and a Sunkist Orange pop when they go to the football field. Parents are reminded to send sunscreen and other sun protection that day for their children. We hope to make this a memorable day for all students and staff.
