English This Week:

The 7th grade is currently finishing up The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. The students really enjoyed this book and will be happy to share the story with you. The test for this will be on Tuesday.

The 8th grade will be starting the Ballroom dance unit this week. This is our opportunity to read and write detailed instructions for something they have never done before. Although they are a bit apprehensive, by the end of the unit most will have a new outlook on the project and be happy to share what they have learned on the living room floor :)

The 9th grade class has been discussing what makes a genre of literature, particularly the horror genre. We have looked into how a horror story is developed and analyzed the elements of fiction including setting, characterization, and plot. As they finish up reading some selected "horror" stories from our text, they will soon be writing a script for their own horror flick!

Classroom Expectations: This classroom, as well as the school, have made a commitment to the Love and Logic philosophy of classroom and school management. This philosophy is based on choices and fair treatment. Each student will be respected in this classroom and each incident of disruptive or irresponsible behavior will be handled individually between the teacher and student incorporating natural consequences when possible and student input on consequences to insure fairness to all parties.

For more information on this philosophy as it is used in school or how you can use this philosophy at home, feel free to check out materials from our school resource library located in the Superintendent's office. You may also find additional information at the Love and Logic Website.

ZAP PROGRAM: This program was implemented in the junior high in 2008 to provide extra time and/or incentive for students to complete daily homework. ZAP stands for Zeroes Aren't Permitted. The junior high core staff, (English, Math, Social Studies, and Science), will require that every assignment be finished to a satisfactory level (evidence of valid effort must be present).

In the event that an assignment is not turned in at this level, the student will be required to stay after school or come in before school to complete the assignment. The required time commitment for this is 30 minutes. However, the student may stay longer if necessary to complete work.

ZAP may be required for those students with perpetual missing work and is always open to those students wishing to find a quiet time to complete homework.
